German Music #4: Bach, Italy and 2raumwohnung

Spring: sprung!  Frühling[s]: erwachen!

Spring is finally on its way to Damme, which means warmer weather, rain, flowers and birds.  Oh yes, the birds.  They’re back with a vengeance, including the delightfully persistent woodpecker living in the woods near my house.  I even saw a pheasant at the bird feeder in my yard.  Crazy!

Pheasant at the bird feeder. Sorry it's a bit blurry; I didn't want to scare him off with the flash.

Spring’s longer days mean more time for pleasant runs in the woods.  I have been running with music again, and when 2raumwohnung’s “Ich und Elaine” started on my portable media device the other day, I found myself running with a smile.  2raumwohnung (German for “2-room apartment”) is a pop duo who have been together since 2000.  I’m a sucker for male-female duos, like Mates of State, but I’m a huge sucker for bewitching female vocals.  2raumwohnung has both.  On an interesting, but slightly unrelated note, they are spending some time recording and traveling on the American West Coast right now.  If you like The Bird and the Bee, or fun (in general), you will probably like 2raumwohnung.

Spring!

And now for a live music report.  Two weekends ago the Gymnasium in the nearby town of Lohne hosted one of its Meisterkonzerte (masters’ concerts) entitled “Bach und Italien,” Bach and Italy.  The 17-member ensemble, Concerto Köln, performed six pieces: two of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, and four pieces by Italian composers, who had been Bach’s contemporaries.  The concert as excellent!  I really enjoy string instruments, and it it’s always interesting to see and hear a live harpsichord, but for a former flute nerd such as myself, the best part  was the use of recorders and wooden flutes.  Believe it or not, a recorder in the hands of a professional musician can make actual music.

One Response to German Music #4: Bach, Italy and 2raumwohnung

Recorders and wooden flutes can be super painful if they’re in the wrong hands… sounds like you’ve got access to a sweet mix of live music there! Killer.
